Rajasthan’s First Retroauricular Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery Performed Successfully at SMS Hospital

Jaipur, November 6: The ENT Department of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur has successfully performed a thyroid surgery using the retroauricular endoscopic technique. This is believed to be the first such surgery in Rajasthan conducted with this advanced, minimally invasive method.

Dr. Pawan Singhal, Head of the ENT Department, said that the operation was performed on Kajal, a 20-year-old woman from Bhusawar in Bharatpur district, without making any incision on her neck. The thyroid nodules were removed through a tiny opening made behind the ear, using an endoscopic camera.

Dr. Singhal explained that this technique does not require any neck incision. A small, hidden cut is made behind the ear within the hairline, through which endoscopic instruments are inserted. This allows surgeons to access the thyroid gland and remove the nodules precisely and safely.

According to Dr. Singhal, this approach is safer and cosmetically superior compared to traditional open thyroid surgery. “The risk of complications or infection is minimal, and the patient experiences no post-operative pain or voice change,” he said.

What Is Retroauricular Endoscopic Surgery?

Retroauricular Endoscopic Surgery is a modern, minimally invasive surgical technique in which the operation is performed from behind the ear, avoiding any visible scars on the neck or face.

This method is mainly used for thyroid, parathyroid, and salivary gland surgeries.

Key Advantages of This Technique:

  • No visible scar — No cut or mark on the neck.
  • Less pain and faster recovery — Patients return to normal life sooner.
  • Minimal blood loss and infection risk.
  • Enhanced precision — Endoscopic visualization offers better clarity.
  • Cosmetically appealing — Particularly beneficial for young and female patients.
